Why is the Indian sub-continent extremely diverse?

This probably has to do with India's ideal position bordering the Indian Ocean. Trade of all kinds ped through India, so many foreign influences could be felt there. It also probably has something to do with India's history. India has a long history of being politically divided, and thus it has been easy for a couple of foreign empires to conquer India, therefore extending more foreign influence in India.
