I have a snake in my yard (south of Indy) and am trying to identify it. Can you help?

It is somewhat thin (approx. 2 ft long) with a brown/light brown checkerboard banded pattern...The pattern starts at the head more diamond shaped and becomes rectangular later down its body. What do you think it is?
